Cryotherapy for Prostate Cancer
Cryotherapy, or cryosurgery, is a technique that involves controlled freezing of the prostate gland. It is most suitable for men whose cancer is confined to the prostate.
This procedure is performed under anesthesia using transrectal ultrasound guidance. Freezing probes are inserted directly into the tumor within the prostate, thus freezing the cancer cells.
Cryotherapy is used as a rescue therapy for men who have not responded to external beam radiation therapy or brachytherapy. Ideal candidates are men with a Gleason score lower than 8. Side effects may include temporary obstruction of urine flow, temporary incontinence, impotence, and in some cases, injury to the rectum.
