Mini vs Standard: The Cost of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy
February 8, 2021 — The American Urological Association’s member newsletter, AUANews, recently published the article of Dr. Julio Chong – Mini vs Standard: The Cost of Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy – which he co-authored with cohort Julio Davalos, MD, of Chesapeake Urology in Maryland. The paper examines Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), which has traditionally been the standard of care for staghorn calculi and larger kidney stones greater than 20 mm. The article takes a close look at the standard PCNL (sPCNL) and Minipercutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPCNL), which the paper states, “is now a consideration for smaller lower pole stones due to its high stone clearance rates compared to retrograde intrarenal surgery or extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy…”
