Men: Simple Steps to Take Better Care of Your Urologic Health

Men: Simple Steps to Take Better Care of Your Urologic Health

Men: Make prevention a priority. Take these three important steps to improve your urologic health:

STEP 1 – GET YOUR PROSTATE CHECKED

Some 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that impact their quality of life, from benign issues to prostate cancer. Each year, more than 230,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Make prostate cancer screening a priority this year, especially if you’re a man at higher risk for developing the disease.

Chesapeake Urology offers FREE prostate cancer screenings to men in the greater Baltimore community.

Prostate cancer isn’t the only condition affecting the prostate. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate, is a common condition in older men in which the prostate gland enlarges, causing a variety of urinary issues. BPH causes a number of troublesome symptoms from increasingly frequent urination, especially at night, to difficulty urinating and the inability to completely empty the bladder.

Chesapeake Urology physicians are now offering several innovative therapies for the treatment of BPH, including minimally invasive options such as UroLift that alleviate symptoms and restore quality of life without the need for more invasive surgery or medications and their side effects.

Here’s what you need to know about BPH and the latest minimally invasive treatments.

STEP 2 – DON’T IGNORE SEXUAL HEALTH ISSUES

As men grow older, sexual health issues may need to be addressed by a specially trained urologist. Talking to a urologist about male sexual health issues such as erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, low testosterone, and even male infertility can be difficult for many men, but it is incredibly important. Often, male sexual dysfunction is caused by an underlying factor or medical condition that may be solved with medical and/or surgical treatment. There are times when the dysfunction is caused by stress, anxiety or outside pressure and this too, can often be treated very successfully.

STEP 3 – MAKE IT YOUR MISSION TO GET HEALTHY, AND STAY THAT WAY

Focusing on your health, especially as you age, is important for long-term health and vitality. A little bit of commitment goes a long way. Follow these steps to achieve your health goals:

  1. Quit smoking – smoking is a leading contributor to many men’s health issues including cardiovascular disease and conditions such as bladder cancer.
  2. Eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and low in unhealthy fats.
  3. Get more exercise – from walking and swimming to running and biking, get moving a little bit every day.
  4. Stay hydrated and limit salts to help prevent kidney stones.
  5. See your urologist for regular health checks and follow-up exams.
